We asked…Joe Answered

What excites you most about the future of the profession?

AI is continuing to change the way that we see the role of the accountant. It is highlighting the incredible work that we do around the numbers and the traditional image of the ‘numbers person’ is changing. The market is now realizing that the work of the accountant is not just putting the numbers together, it’s understanding the relationships between the results, it’s analyzing the effects of decisions and it’s using the data to make informed, critical decisions for the future. I believe that most accountants have always done this but these skills are now being recognized and sought out.

What do you believe clients need most from their accounting advisor during periods of uncertainty or change?

An open door, a listening mentality, an even-headed approach and a willingness to push back or play devil’s advocate. Uncertainty can understandably bring trepidation or a desire to change direction without proper analysis of the situation. As an advisor, I see my role as gathering the data that’s available, analyzing it and giving my clients the tools and guidance to make decisions that are supported by facts.

How do you measure success?

When my clients call me before the big decisions, not just during the audit, demonstrating trust and confidence in my advice, I see that as success. When the people I work with see me as someone who will always be accountable, dependable and supportive, I see that as success.
