Deadline to File or Extend Returns is April 18th

For the first time in two years, the April tax filing deadline has not been extended and taxpayers can expect to file their returns at the regularly scheduled time. Because of Emancipation Day, a holiday recognized in Washington DC, the deadline for filing or requesting a 6-month extension is Monday, April 18th rather than Friday the 15th. Even so, it’s still a more normal filing situation than we’ve faced since the start of the pandemic.

Those expecting refunds should consider filing electronically and request direct deposit. This is the best way to expedite processing and receipt of funds.

Taxpayers who make quarterly estimated tax payments should note that, along with filing and/or extending returns, April 18th is the deadline to make those first quarter payments.
