Tim Ulen Attends CalCPA Leadership Institute

Tim headshotCongratulations to Timothy Ulen, PP&Co Supervising Senior Accountant, who was recently accepted into (and completed) the California Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (CalCPA’s) Leadership Institute. Program hopefuls must demonstrate a capacity for leadership in the profession, and their firms’ propensity to support their development as leaders. For applicants who were accepted, CalCPA underwrote the costs of the program.

Institute participants committed to 5 full days of leadership education and training. Topics included Leadership Behavior, Managing People, Planning and Life Management, Accountability, and Communication Skills to name a few. Participants committed to two weekends – 11/16-17 and 12/8-9 – in 2015, as well as one very special outing this year. On January 19th, they took a trip to Sacramento to visit the State Capitol and engage with representatives of California’s State Government.

In Sacramento, they joined other members of the accounting profession for CPA Day at the Capitol, CalCPA’s annual event to kick-off advocacy efforts for the upcoming legislative year.  The event’s primary purpose is to increase the visibility of the profession in the political arena by building relationships with legislators and advocating for the profession.   CPAs had the opportunity to meet their local representatives and discuss legislative issues relative to public accounting.  The message this year was threefold: to advocate that California conform to the new federal tax filing deadlines; to advocate against the proposed tax on professional services; and, to increase awareness of financial literacy workshops offered throughout California by CalCPA.

Members of the 2015 graduating class of the CalCPA Leadership Institute were asked to exercise their new leadership skills by actively participating in the advocacy efforts.  Tim joined other members of the Silicon Valley/San Jose Chapter for a visit to the office of California Senator Bob Wieckowski to deliver their message. We are proud of Tim’s accomplishment and his commitment to CalCPA, the firm, and the profession. We look forward to great things to come from him.
