Managing Partner Marc Parkinson met with California
Assemblyman Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks) as part
of CPA Day at the State Capitol. Parkinson helped
recognize Niello for his work on improving the
financial literacy of Californians. The California
Society of CPA’s travels to Sacramento
annually to discuss the ramifications of legislation
on the accounting profession as well as current
financial issues such as financial literacy.
A
recent study by the Jump$tart (www.jumpstart.org)
coalition for personal financial literacy concluded
that a majority of high school students were
lacking basic personal financial knowledge that
includes things such as credit cards, checking
accounts, mortgage basics, and retirement accounts.
Assemblyman Niello has introduced two measures
in the legislature to bring awareness to the
lack of financial literacy amongst Californians,
particularly California’s youth. ACR 120,
recently passed by the legislature, declared
the month of April, 2006 as Financial Literacy
month. In addition, the Assemblyman has introduced
AB 2787, which will require the State Board
of Education to come up with financial literacy
standards that our students must meet.
