New invoice scam aimed at small businesses being investigated
April 19, 2006
If you receive an invoice from the Corporate Compliance Recorder, do not pay it. This is a disguised solicitation for funds from a company the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau is watching closely. Several small businesses have reported receiving a mailed solicitation that looks like an invoice from the State.
Corporate Compliance Recorder’s solicitation looks like an invoice from the State, and is titled: "Disclosure Statement, Annual Minutes, Shareholders and Directors (Domestic Stock Corporation)". According to the Better Business Bureau, the solicitation asks recipients to pay fees ranging from $95 to $175 immediately, and quotes the California Corporations Code regarding requirements for a corporation to keep adequate and accurate books and records of accounts, minutes, and member information. The mailer fails to mention that the sections it quotes apply to nonprofit religious corporations.
