On Wednesday, January 18th, Petrinovich Pugh & Company and Strategy Law co-sponsored an event titled “Institutional Capital Partners – Foreign and Domestic.” At the Silicon Valley Capital Club, the host site of the event, friends of PP&Co and Strategy were treated to good food and wine, and the opportunity to network. Added to the refreshments, attendees heard from experts in the field of institutional capital funding.

The program focused on how institutional capital partners work with developers and builders to fund projects, both in the U.S. and abroad. Understanding the requirements of these groups can effectively enhance selection and success as developers, builders and investors.  Additionally, grasping the differences between the two sectors can have long term implications to business models and relationships.  Attendees included developers, builders, and real estate syndicators and investors, along with related service providers.

Tony Avila

Tony Avila

Tony Avila, Managing Principal of Encore Capital Management and Founder/CEO of Builder Advisor Group was first to take the podium.  Tony discussed the current environment for real estate investment opportunities in the U.S., focusing particularly on projects his firm was developing in Florida and Southern California.    He discussed the ways in which his team uses their expertise in land acquisition, entitlements, and development to create strategies that deliver attractive returns while providing downside risk protection.  It’s always illuminating to hear an experienced voice expound on today’s market and what the future portends.

Kelly Miyashita

Kelly Miyashita

Kelly Miyashita, Founder and Principal of Arcada Capital, followed up Avila’s presentation.  Kelly illustrated the challenges and opportunities in working with private Japanese real estate investors.  He provided the audience an insider’s view into the unique characteristics of the Japanese real estate investor and market, a topic he has spent much of his career mastering.

Following the presentations, guests could meet and talk one-on-one with the experts, ask specific questions, and further network with fellow attendees. Judging by the volume of the discussions, and the frequency of the laughter, everyone enjoyed the evening.
